PNNL: Subsurface Science & Technology Group Pacific Northwest National Laboratory Skip to Main Content U.S. Department of Energy Search PNNL PNNL Home About Research Publications Jobs Newsroom Contacts Subsurface Science & Technology Group With our expertise across a broad spectrum of the earth sciences, the Subsurface Science and Technology group advances technologies for environmental remediation and subsurface energy systems. We provide integrated solutions for complex subsurface systems, such as carbon sequestration and waste management. Our broad capabilities enable us to analyze for any element on the periodic table—operating both in the field and in the 20+ labs we manage—to solve the nation's most critical environmental and energy challenges. Our three technical teams include: Characterization & Remediation Interfacial Geochemistry Geophysics & Geomechanics Tracking Injected Fluids: A Seismic Contrast Agent Breakthrough Researchers at PNNL are developing a new class of acoustically active nanomaterials designed to improve the high-resolution tracking of exploratory fluids injected into the subsurface. Once deployed in the field as stable injectable liquid, the new acoustic metamaterials could disrupt current technologies and improve the way subsurface geophysical monitoring and mapping is done. Providing International Guidance to Achieve Remediation "End States" An International Atomic Energy Agency effort, chaired by PNNL's Mike Truex, will help inform the process for achieving successful end states at contaminated sites worldwide. Imaging Goes Underground at the Hanford Site "It's sort of like using infrared goggles to see heat signatures in the dark, except this is underground." PNNL researchers worked with CHPRC to successfully implement a state-of-the-art approach for monitoring the process of remediating residual uranium found in the soil at Hanford’s 300 Area near the Columbia River. SOCRATES Extracts Wisdom from Groundwater Data To help Hanford site managers make informed cleanup decisions, PNNL developed a set of online software tools that perform multiple types of analyses on environmental data collected from over 2,000 groundwater monitoring wells. This suite of tools, funded by the U.S. Department of Energy's Deep Vadose Zone Program, is called SOCRATES (Suite Of Comprehensive Rapid Analysis Tools for Environmental Sites). Radiological Microscopy Suite Enables Innovative Nuclear Science A suite addition brings a new flavor of nuclear research capabilities to PNNL's Radiochemical Processing Laboratory. Capturing FutureGen 2.0 Over the last few decades, carbon capture and storage approaches have been developed to capture carbon dioxide and inject it into underground reservoirs. FutureGen 2.0 was a project that aimed to develop these approaches at the industrial scale. Although support for this project ended in 2015, FutureGen 2.0 provided valuable information and tangible results. PNNL's Qafoku Invited to Serve on Prominent Soil Science Editorial Advisory Board The Encyclopedia of Soil Science Editor-in-Chief has invited Nik Qafoku, a scientist in the Geosciences group, to serve on the Editorial Advisor Board for the 3rd edition of the encyclopedia, scheduled to publish in early 2016. The encyclopedia covers all branches of soil science and addresses numerous challenges including soil structure, irrigation, erosion control, and more.
